Guide to transferring your domain name

Basic guide to the domain transfer process.

This article describes how to transfer a domain name into my control panel so that I can administer it for you. This makes me responsible for billing you for renewals but does not transfer ownership.

.uk Domains

Every .uk domain name has an IPS-TAG (often abbreviated to TAG) associated with it which can be changed to determine which Control Panel your domain can be administered from. For example if the TAG is 123-REG your domain can be admistered by a user, such as myself, with a 123-Reg account.

.uk Domain Transfer Instructions

If the TAG is already 123-REG and you registered the domain yourself:

An inter-account transfer will allow me to control your domain on your behalf:

  1. Login to 123-Reg
  2. Select Manage domain
  3. Domain Transfers > Inter-account transfer
  4. Select the domain to transfer from the dropdown and in the username field enter: chrisdempsey78
  5. Select Request Transfer

If the TAG is already 123-REG and someone else registered the domain for you:

Contact the person who registered the domain for you and ask them to:

  1. Perform an inter-account to transfer the domain to 123-Reg Username: chrisdempsey78

If the TAG is not 123-REG and you registered the domain yourself

  1. Login to your Control Panel and follow the process to Transfer Domain which will involve updating the TAG to: 123-REG
    Or
  2. Contact the Registrar you used to register the domain and ask them to Update the TAG on the domain to: 123-REG

If the TAG is not 123-REG and someone else controls it for you:

  1. Contact the current domain administrator and ask them to update the TAG to 123-REG
  2. Tell me once the TAG has been updated so that I can begin the process to bring it into my 123-Reg Control Panel

TLD Domains

Top Level Domains are not country specific and include .com, .org and .net.

TLD Domain Transfer Instructions

If you registered the domain yourself:

  1. Unlock the domain (when a domain is locked it cannot be transferred)
  2. Ensure the admin contact email address is up to date or change it to chris@cube.pw (this is the address the Auth code is sent to, which is required to complete the transfer)
  3. Tell me when this is done and send me the Authorisation code if available so that I can begin the process to bring the into my 123-Reg Control Panel

If someone else controls the domain:

  1. Contact the current domain administrator and ask them to:
    1. Unlock the domain
    2. Change the admin contact email address to chris@cube.pw
    3. Supply the Authorisation (AUTH) code if their control panel generates one
  2. Tell me when this is done and send me the Authorisation code if available so that I can begin the process to bring the into my 123-Reg Control Panel

General Notes

If transferring domain is critical to a project it is advisable to confirm the process and expected timescales in advance of any deadline. You should also confirm any costs involved such as a release fee or contract termination fee.
